Spring Class Graduates

Kailua, Oahu - Students in the spring courses at the Women’s Prison produce life success goal maps and posters to honor Queen Liliʻuoklani.

Since 2011 Pūʻā Foundation has been offering Hawaiian history and cultural well-being focused classes at the Women’s Community Correctional Center (WCCC). This spring marked 11 years for the Cultural Healing & Well-being course. Students in the class selected an alii to focus on, and the group that chose Queen Liliʻuokalani made the poster below. Since 2014 we have been offering the Pre-Transition classes, that focuses on reentry life success planning. The vision board above was made by one of the students in the class. The Foundation covers all costs associated with these courses, and funding is made possible in part to the Foundation’s generous donors and contributors.

Here are some quotes from the PreTransition class graduates:
JNS - Feeling empowered and driven. learned about resources and things about myself and asking for help.

TKG - Be positive and strong in all that may come my way. To reflect on how i pursue all opportunities and refrain from past behaviors to be productive

Here are some quotes from the Cultural Healing & Well-being graduates:

BFB - its helped me to learn things that I never even knew existed; such as the alii and all they went through back in the day

HAS - it shows our history isnʻt what we lost but what we can gain. The information given to us is helpful to build up one's self.
